PR2 : a cooperative regional project to manage pyrethroid resistance of the American bollworm

Vaissayre M., Martin T., Prudent P., Vassal J.M.. 1999. In : Proceedings of the ICAC-CCRI regional consultation on insecticide resistance management in cotton, 28 juin-1er juillet 1999, Multan, Pakistan. s.l. : s.n., p. 70-77. Central Cotton Research Institute, 1999-06-28/1999-07-01, Multan (Pakistan).

Control failures have been observed in farmers' fields in Benin, Burkina, Côte d'Ivoire and Mali in the course of the last three years. Results of bioassays revealed a loss of suceptibility to pyrethroids in the American Bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). Such a situation led to the implementation of a collaborative project (Projet Régional de Prévention de la Résistance, or PR2), involving National Research Services and Cotton Companies of six West African Countries, in cooperation with Cirad and IRAC. LD50s, observed in 1997 and 1998 on some populations of H. armigera show resistance factors varying from 20 to 200 for cypermethrin as well as for deltamethrin. A vial-test survey conducted during the 1998 growing season in different countries of West Africa, reveals a loss of effectiveness of the pyrethroid-based spraying program at the end of the season. Short term proposals are a) annual field surveys using the vial- test method to learn more about the spacial distribution and the evolution of resistance, according to IRM practices b) reinforcement of IPM basic principles in the agrosystem (crop management, pest and beneficial monitoring) c) restricted use of pyrethroids during the growing season and d the use of threshold-based interventions to control the American Bollworm.
