This paper examines two issues. What does it mean to use money as a referent for revealing preferences in non market contexts, where reciprocity and kindship ? This issue deals with the feasibility of monetary valuation techniques in a central Africa forest ecosystem in Eastern Cameroon. In Madagascar, a wide programme of decentralization of resources management is implemented and is offered an opportunity to discuss and contest the necessity of valuation as an initial condition for decision making
