Morphological study and genetic stability of banana variant plants (Musa AAA cv. 'Gran Naine'). In vitro culture, hardening and field phases

In order to determine the genetic stability of soi-ne in vitro propagated variants, "Grand Naine" prototype variant plantas (dwarf, giant, "Mosaic-like" and "Grele") were selected in the field. These rnaterials were reintroduced, in vitro multiplied, greenhouse acclimatized, and then, taken back to the field.It was found that under in vitro conditions, it is possible to recognize only 19,20% of the dwarf variation. During the acclimatization stage, dwarf, giant and "Mosaic-like" differences were more evident. It was not possible to distinguish the "Grele" variation from normal plants due to morphological characteristics. Once in the field, dwarf, giant and "Mosaie- like" variations were completely different from normal plants.T0 conclude, dwarf, giant and "Mosaie-like" différences are transmissible after five cycles of in vitro multiplication or conventional propagation. As a consequence, they become an adequate material to study the origin and to search for early variation rnarkers. On the contrary, the "Grele variant" appears to bc a case of epigenetic variation.
