Genopole Languedoc-Roussillon Montpellier: A new interface for animal and plant genome research [S04-14]

The Genopole Languedoc Roussillon, created in 1999 to develop genomic research in both plant and human domains and to promote the link between academia and industry, gathers over 300 researchers in 40 laboratories distributed in different research establishment (CNRS, CIRAD, IRD, INSERM, CEA). The Genopole is centered around nine genomic technological platform: Plant transformation technology, Transcriptome, Sequencing, Robotics and Genotyping, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Structural Biology and Mouse Clinic, These plateforms help develop medium- to large-scale academic and industrial programs in health, plant and animal genomes characterization, bioinformatics, and on the societal impacts of biotechnology. Three strong axes of research were developed at the Genopole Languedoc Roussillon: Biomedical (G-protein coupled receptor, neurogenomics, cell cycle control in cancer development and database development), Plant Genomics and activities to support biotech and pharmaceutical companies. The research activities in the Plant Genomic area are focused on rice, Arabidopsis and Ostreococcus model species. Large scale sequencing (Ostreococcus), creation of T-DNA tagged populations (rice), high throughput genetic mapping and proteomics (Arabidopsis) are underway in the laboratories located at INRA, CIRAD, IRD, CNRS. A second area of development in plant genomics is the development of BAC and EST libraries of tropical species in collaboration with the Agropolis Platform, INIBAP and Labex EMBRAPA. Given its geographical implantation the Genopole Languedoc Roussillon assures the interface between public and private sector in the region and the partnership with Mediterrenean and developing countries.
