P.T. SOCFINDO - Indonesia. Report on the visit to 27 March to 12 April 2003

This visit took place at Aek Loba from 27 March to 3 April 2003 then at PSBB from 4 to 11 April 2003.The main points covered were: I - At Aek Loba: - Analysis of the results from last season, checking the coherence of the control crosses. - Identification of the most promising and the poorest parents. - Inspection of the crosses carried out with the most promising parents planted at Aek Loba Timur. II - At Bangun Bandar: - Evolution of Socfindo seed production capacities over the next 15 years. The age of the parents, losses due to Ganoderma and the average production potential of one parent were taken into account. - Production potential will pass through a peak of 30 million dry seeds in 2009. - A seed garden renewal programme has been proposed for Bangun Bandar, both to maintain the production capacities and to improve the quality of the seeds produced. - In the coming years, and before 2006, it will be necessary to proceed with a general realignment of production potential, proposing major balances between Deli x La Mé, Deli x Yangambi, (Deli x Angola) x La Mé or Deli x Nifor. - Seed production for 2003/2004 has been revised and the seed production potential has been recalculated. - Comments were made on seed quality. A distinction was made between Deli x la Mé seeds and Deli x Yangambi seeds. - Pollen availability was examined. - No change has been made to the current mating design. The codification tables for seed categories produced by Socfindo have been completed and a reminder is given of the CIRAD tables. - The genetic improvement programme has been reviewed. Adjustments are needed in the current mating designs to comply with the earlier recommendations. - The project for planting material exchanges between Socfindo, and Lonsum has been finalized and a formal proposal has been submitted to management at Bah Lias and at Socfindo.
