This review of the research undertaken on the most important fruit species is the result of the contributions of some French fruit breeders working at INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) and CIRAD (Centre de coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement). This review aims at proposing some trends for the future as well as emphasizing questions to be answered by the scientific community in the short term. The review deals mainly with banana, citrus, pineapple, mango for tropical species, apple, peach and apricot for temperate species. Other species are also considered and the information obtained is synthetically summarized : this is the case of strawberry, sweet cherry, almond, kiwi, chestnut and walnut. For each species, objectives and breeding methods are considered first, then leading teams in the world, and lastly, the main results of the last years and perspectives for international cooperation
