Sustainable high yielding oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) breeding by P.T. Socfin Indonesia Medan is based on a Recurrent Reciprocal Scheme (RRS). Along with Cirad as team-mate, this scheme is connected to other network partners in Africa and South-America. This connection allows P.T. Socfin Indonesia to exploit the results obtained within the network. For more than 20 years, P.T. Socfin Indonesia has carried out more than 1,100 ha of progeny and clonal trials. The mainstream is dedicated to the RRS it self, but recently additional targets have been included. Exploiting the most recent information collected in the clonal and progeny trials implemented at PSBB, P.T. Socfin Indonesia is implementing a scheme for Ganoderma Tolerance breeding. Full partner of the "Link2Palm" INCO - DEV project with 6 other participants, P.T. Socfin Indonesia is engaged in the construction, the assessment and the exploitation of high density DNA marker and physical maps in oil palm also. From the Aek Loba Timur Project, very promising parents have been detected. The best progenies planted in 1995-programme produce from 8.6 to 9.1 tons CPO per hectare at 5 to 7 years old. Some very promising genitors induce more than 28% OER. Providing a very high quality planting material is the main issue of this breeding programme. The current potential of the P.T. Socfindo planting material rises to 7 tons total oil / ha, with 24% industrial extraction rate, high precocity, high homogeneity and slow growth in the North-Sumatra conditions.
