In order to provide a new option for cotton growers in the south of Brazil, Coodetec/Cirad are now releasing the CD 408 variety for the 2005-2006 growing period. This was obtained through a breeding program conducted in Primavera do Leste, in the state of Mato &osso, and Palotina, in the state of Paraná, based on the pedigree selection method. The CD 99-2227 line was obtained through the crossing of varieties from an Australian and South American genetic pool, and was tested on harvests 00/01, 01/02, 02/03, and 03/04 in the experimental networks of the following states: Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Maranhão, Paraná, and São Paulo. CD 408 is a Mid- season variety, with a high yield potential, and a very high ginning turnout. It is moderately demanding in terms of fertility and it is responsive and moderately demanding for growth regulator. Being adapted to both mechanized and manual harvesting, it is mildly stormproof. Being resistant to bacteriosis and virosis (the Blue Disease), the CD 408 variety has good tolerance to alternaria leaf spot, cotton rust Ramularia and "ramulose". Its fiber has an average quality and it is consistent with the requirements of the domestic market Its recommendation can be extended to the South American cone.
