This article is based on a cross comparison between nine different Rural Agro-Industry cases in Latin America, with a special emphasis on social networks. The applicability of the advantages of proximity for Latin-American small scale agro industries is analyzed based on current theories regarding Industrial Districts, Localized Production Systems and Agro-alimentary Localized Systems. Finally, we analyze how trust based relationships due to proximity contribute to the build up of collective actions that contribute to local development. These collective actions can be one of the means for the "activation" of the specific resources of a territory, so that these small clusters can make face to the challenges posed by globalization.
