In Mali agriculture plays an essential role in supplying food to the rural population and represents a large share of family and country incomes. Extensive farming is the predominant form of agriculture which is exposed to many risks such as drought, floods, pests, diseases, all accentuated by climatic variability. Agricultural production is directly exposed to changes in rainfall and temperatures which determines to a large extent the choice of crops that can be grown. The climate in the Sudario-Sahelian zone is characterized by two distinct seasons: a rainy season from May to September and a dry season the rest of the year. In this climate obtaining good yields depends on: (i) the onset of the rainy season which determines planting date and cultivar choices; (ii) the end of the season which determines whether the crop reaches maturity or not, (iii) the amount of rainfall and temperatures which control to a large extent crop yields. The objective of this paper, is to explore trends in the climate using long-term data analysis for decision support in crop production.
