Large information systems used by international organizations and central governments are inadequate to meet local development issues. We show through a series of case studies in Northern and Southern situations diverse interest of using local knowledge through mapping. Technological innovations in the field of geomatics and ICT represent a promising approach to enhance the position of this kind of knowledge alongside conventional expertise.
