Study report on the International Round-Test conducted on Stickiness using various testers in relation to spinning performances using a range of cottons : Part 1: Results from testing instruments. Study for International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) and its international Cotton Committee on Testing Methods (ICCTM)

Gourlot J.P., Lassus S.. 2014. Montpellier : CIRAD, 42 p..

Among the ITMF-ICCTM working groups, one is devoted to the study of stickiness which is considered as a cotton contamination. In the past, many attempts have been made to measure stickiness with various techniques created, adapted and/or improved over the years. The main goal of these measuring techniques was to 'predict' processing problems that could occur in the industry such as problems in quality and in productivity when using 'sticky' cottons. This study has been recently organized: 1. To check if all used measuring techniques are able to measure the same characteristic and to check if their results are comparable to each others; 2. To measure the ability of the existing measuring techniques of stickiness to predict stickiness problems in a micro-spinning mill. This first part of the Study Report aims at publishing information related to the first objective, knowing that the second part of the report will be edited during 2014. An International Round-Test has been conducted on Stickiness using various testers, and this in relation to spinning performances using a range of cottons. We observed that the meanings of the results provided by the various measuring techniques are not equivalent, even though they intend to measure/predict the same phenomenon: stickiness. Additionally, we observed differences in levels of readings, both within laboratories using the same technique and between techniques. This indicates a potential axis of improvement, which could be oriented toward a harmonization of the measurement of this cotton characteristic.
