Determination of the longitudinal modulus of elasticity (young's modulus) by the acoustic methods in relation to site factors. Application to Tetraclinis articulata

Maatoug M., Gérard J.. 2004. In : Proceedings of the International Symposium on Wood Sciences. s.l. : s.n., p. 39-39. international symposium on wood sciences, 2004-10-24/2004-10-29, Montpellier (France).

Tetraclinis articulata is endemic to the south western Mediterranean, especially Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and is a source of oil. In this context we chose 10 trees from three ecologically distinct sites in purely Mediterranean forest, to determine the longitudinal modulus of elasticity (Young's Modulus) by the acoustic method. This non-standard acoustic method implements a device designed at the Cirad-foret (France) and makes it possible to measure the Young's modulus E L non-destructively and to give very similar results to those of the mechanical method.. We also studied the influence of site factors on the modulus. The results obtained indicate that Thuja is a heavy wood with a weak Young's modulus. The variance analysis to two criteria of hierarchical classification showed that the standard effect of station and the tree effect in the station are always significant. This oil producing wood has low rigidity when growing in a sub-wet climate at low altitude. (Texte intégral)
