Recent advances in camelids biology, health and production : Proceedings of the 5th conference ISOCARD 2018. Laâyoune : ISOCARD, p. 272-274. Conference of the international society of camelid research and development ISOCARD 2018. 5, 2018-11-12/2018-11-15, Laâyoune (Maroc).

Trace minerals are crucial for animal health and productivity. They play an important role in many physiological activities and their deficiency causes a variety of pathological problems, metabolic defects and consequently reduces productivity. The demand for animal products in Saudi Arabia (SA) is increasing rapidly and the supply is still below the required level partly because of low animal productivity. Camel (Came/us dromedarius) is considered one of the main sources of healthy meat and milk for human consumption within SA. The number of camels in SA fluctuates from year to year because of variations in conditions caused by drought, erratic rainfall and global warming. Camels suffer from growth retardation of newborns, low feed efficiency, anemia, poor fertility, poor reproduction and many other metabolic disorders. Evaluating the trace minerals status of camels by season and possible adoption of new technologies for supplementation will positively affect camels' productivity, natural resources, human health, social equity and economic growth with high profitability. The most critical issues of trace minerals will be discussed and the important of intensive research recommended.
