The multifunctionality of agriculture will certainly constitute a subject for passionate debate during the current global round of trade negotiations. Two views clash at these debates: one group invoking the multifunctional character of agriculture - in particular as a public good - to justify continuing support and protection, and another group declaring that agriculture should be exposed to free competition as is any other economic sector. This paper offers a definition of multifunctionality drawing on empirical evidence, examines the public nature of specific functions, and assesses the influence of market maturity on the use of the multifunctional character of agriculture.
