Oil palm Ganoderma research project in North Sumatra, SOCFINDO - LONSUM - CIRAD : Mission report 7 to 22 October 2003

De Franqueville H.. 2004. Montpellier : CIRAD-CP, 19 p.. numero_rapport: CP_SIC 1697.

The main objectives of the visit were as follows: - To have a third visit in the framework of the scientific collaboration contract on Basal Stem Rot, based on a partnership between FT Socfindo, LonSum (Bah Lias Research Station, BLRS) and Cirad. - To review the work program and to analyse results and prospects. - To discuss the project with Socfindo and LonSum staff and management. A meeting was held in Medan at the end of the visit to give conclusions to Socfindo management and to submit a preliminary report. Since the beginning of the project, a lot of work has been done in terms of laboratory implementation, technical staff training, laboratory experiments on Ganoderma culture. Many experiments have been performed in prenursery and in nursery but despite of this effort, it is still difficult to obtain symptoms after artificial inoculation of the pathogen. The fungus is not known to be a microorganism easy to handle and the successive operations require a lot of time. It seems that, in those experiments, we have to face a problem of inoculum survival. It is proposed in this report to better investigate the conditions which could promote the pathogen installation: i) pre-inoculation up to 6, 4 or 2 months prior to, seed or seedling transfer to babybag or nursery bag and ii) control of the potential antagonistic microflora, which has proven to be highly efficient with another soil-borne pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. elaeidis. The highest priority must be given to inoculation trials but the prospect to develop a biotest for strain screening, based on the toxicity of culture filtrates, is promising. At last, proposals for field disease scoring, taking into account USR symptoms, are submitted in this document.
