Trial RS CC 07 shows year after year the depressive effect of the insect pest Sufetula on hybrid coconut yields through repeated attacks on the root system. A soil covered with ferns and coconut palm waste encourages the presence of Sufetula, whereas a perfectly bare soil reduces the degree of damage. The trial will come to a close in June 2007. Trial RS CC 08, which has been very well maintained for 2 years, shows the positive effect of the total bare soil practice on the yields of mature hybrid coconut palms previously affected by Sufetula. It also shows the preponderance of chlorine in the mineral nutrition of the coconut palms. Trial RS CC 09 has been halted because upkeep is insufficient and erratic. Trial RS CC 10 is showing the positive effect of fertilization on growth, flowering and fruit-setting of young hybrid coconut palms. Coconut husk ash is proving to be an excellent fertilizer, as effective as KCI mineral fertilizer, in the proportion of 2 to 2.5 for 1. This trial also shows that coconut palms are affected very little by the pest Sufetula when they are planted far enough away from infested mature palms, and especially when they are surrounded by a strip of pineapples in a monoculture. Trial RS CC 11 was planted in February 2006, in compliance with the protocol. The growth of the young coconut palms was retarded for the first 3 months by a combination of unfavourable circumstances: hot dry period just after planting, attacks by the insect Plessispa and the fungus Pestalozzia. However, the situation is improving, and the coconut palms should soon recover their normal growth rate. It is proposed that another experiment be set up in the first half of 2007: RS CC 12, which will test various ways of eradicating Sufetula when replanting.
