BioZoonoSEA platform

The BioZoonoSEA platform for Research, Higher Education and Training, based at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kasetsart University, is a concerted action developed since 2012, by Kasetsart University, CIRAD and IRD, further on joined by Mahidol University (Faculty of Tropical Medicine) for (i) temporary gathering of human resources and experiences, (ii) to fill gaps in the knowledge of neglected zoonotic parasitoses and their vectors, and (iii) to respond to specific needs in emerging diseases identified at the regional level in SEA. Priority topics will be on Helminthiases (trichinellosis, Opistorchiasis, clonorchiasis, fasciolosis) and protozooses (Giardia, Leishmania, Trypanosoma, Plasmodium, Toxoplasma, Sarcocystis). The main partners are in Thailand: Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen & Chulalongkorn University, Phramongkutklao college of Medicine, DLD ; NUOL in Lao PDR, NaVRI in Cambodia, NIVR, IEBR, NIMPE and NCVD in Vietnam, VRI & UPM in Malaysia, UGM and IRCVS in Indonesia: CMU and LBU in Philippines, and Sun Yat Sen University in China. Four types of actions have been implemented so far: (1) Technical and academic trainings and expertise have been made through master teachings and supervising as well as individual trainings; the new BioZoonoSEA laboratory for parasitology, serology and molecular techniques was launched on 25th November 2015 at FVM/KU; it will be used for individual and medium size trainings (<20 persons); (2) Workshops on zoonoses of Regional interest have been organised: so far 509 persons participated to the BioZoonoSEA workshops ad 248 to the 9 trainings organised in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Lao; (3) Biological banks and Data resources are made available: a total of 12,000 samples has been gathered (cattle, buffalo, horse, pig, goat, sheep, dog, human, wild rodents…) and protocols and web resources made downloadable; (4) Joint research projects (MSc & PhD supervising) are under development: 5 master students are working in thi
