In the fields of food security early warning and adaptation of farmers' practices to climate variability and change, research and development must integrate knowledge from various disciplines. Based on crop modeling concepts (SARRA II) and farmers' practices, we developed a decision support tool for agroclimatological analyses. The objectives were mainly to enhance the knowhow and methods for early warning systems, and the evolution and adaptation of farming practices and crop varieties to climatic constraints. Ultimately, this tool will be useful to policy makers, researchers extension officiers, and farmers organizations. Possible analyses cover different spatial and temporal scales, allowing impact and/or risk studies using past or future time series of climate data, monitoring of the growth conditions of an agricultural plot over a cropping season, estimation/forecast of regional crop yields, etc.. The model also accounts for the characteristics of crop varieties that are adapted to environmental constraints. Because of its flexibility for possible evolution, this tool can be adapted to different conditions and thus allow for useful interaction between researchers and their development partners.
