This first phase of the CORI-CIRAD Remote Sensing (RS) project aimed at selecting suitable areas for RS study in Uganda and co-ordinating the survey activities developed in Uganda under RS and CORI baseline survey project. For this purpose, 3 CIRAD scientists (remote sensing sp., statistician, plant pathologist) joined CORI scientists team in Kituza. A field tour was organised in the principal coffee growing areas of Uganda to select location for RS survey. The criteria for selection were: presence of coffee wilt disease, diversity of coffee farming system and suitable topography for aerial picture. Seven districts were visited: Massaka, Kyenjojo, Kibale, Mubende, Luwero, Mukono and Jinja. Only in Massaka district, the presence of the disease could be considered as low. Anywhere else, coffee wilt disease could be easily detected, leading from place to place to severe damages, coffee field destruction and switch to another crop (pine apple, sugar cane...). Finally 3 areas were selected for the development of the study: 2 areas of 5 x 15 km, in Mubende and Kyenjojo districts, 1 area of 8 x 15 km in Mukono district. These 3 zones will be investigated in January/February 2002 according to a work programme established during the last part of the mission. Following Mukono Wilt Wokshop recommendations (June 2001, Mukono, Uganda), the two survey's protocols - biological survey and socio-economic survey - were finalised in order to fully take into consideration the extreme diversity of the coffee wilt situation and the farming system contexts in Uganda: the survey will cover all the coffee growing areas in Uganda but will focus on the main central one which represents more than 90% of the total production. 1350 farms will be visited under the biological survey; 300 for the socio-economic survey, according a fully randomised investigation protocol.
