This paper presents a detailed analysis of the structure and evolution of a local market in Muea, Cameroon, 60 kilometers away from the larger city of Douala. The surveys were conducted between 1995 and 2004. For one month, two hundred tradesmen and 50 products were surveyed on every market day. The results show (1) a general decline of the market turnover from 2.8 to 1.7 billions FCFA (from 4.2 to 2.6 million Euros respectively) despite an increase in the number of traders, (2) real prices remaining stable or decreasing between 1995 and 2004, (3) manufactured goods gaining in importance in the trade flows, increasing from 13 to 27% of the total turnover, and (4) horticulture trade stable at 6%.
