Banana's breeding platform, located at CIRAD (Neufchâteau experimental station in Guadeloupe) was set up in 2009 as part of the project "Sustainable Banana Plan". The purpose of this project was to intensify and speed up the process of creating new varieties of dessert banana, adapted to the export market and tolerant to major diseases including Yellow and Black Sigatoka. Strengthening the activities of the platform in the frame of the InterReg "Sustainable Banana Caribbean" project was aimed at broadening the scope of the new hybrids with regional partners, as part of an overall strategy for designing innovative and sustainable banana cropping systems. The actions in this framework focused more specifically on: development of breeding capacities, improving the seed yield, diversification of crosses, Development of an in vitro method for obtaining dwarf or small stature variants from elite triploid hybrids.
