Report on the visit to SOCFINDO, from 1st to 9th March 1991

Examination of the latest results in the genetic trials at Bangun Bandar confirms the very high potential oil production of certain of the crosses being tested, particularly the reproduction of cross L404D x L2T which produced 8,3 tonnes of oil/ha/year on average over the 4-9 year period. The young trials comparing the crosses between parents from improved SOCFINDO or IRHO populations with each other also seem to be very promising, The four Aek Kwasan trials, where individual harvesting is continuing after 10 years, reveal remarkable production stability. The crossing plans designed to ensure a long-term increase in seed production potential and recombine the best parents with each other have been extended. New crossing programmes are proposed with a view to preparing new parent tests, proceeding with ortet selection and restoring fertility to the E. oleifera x E. guineensis interspecific hybrids. Particular attention should be paid to crossing plan implementation. The agreements signed between SOCFINDO and the Marihat Research Centre for selected planting material exchanges should be encouraged. They will enable the two parties to broaden the genetic base of their improved populations and they fit in perfectly with SOCFINDO's current selection strategy. The ortet sampling rate has been speeded up over recent months and it should be possible to complete cloning of all the Aek Kwasan ortets by the end of June 1992. At the same time, the clone field trial programme should be stepped up. The results on young trees in the clonal trials clearly show the benefits to be derived from being able to distribute tried and tested clones such as SOC 04-03. A draft programme has been drawn up for planting trials with material produced from seed and clones, and parent fields, covering 210 ha by 1995. Seed production capacities were examined. In the event of production potential needing to be increased, it would initially be preferable to use a larger number of parents in the fa
