Cottonseed Systems Improvement for Africa (CSI4A). Work Package 1: Baseline studies. Mission report in Cameroon, 16-23 January 2020

Bachelier B., Oumarou P.. 2020. Montpellier : CIRAD-PERSYST; Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, 50 p. + annex 37 p..

Cotton is an important driver of economic development in Africa. Currently, more than three million small African farmers grow cotton in 26 countries, and 20 million people live directly or indirectly from cotton. African production accounts for 10-15% of the world market, with the sub-Saharan region being the fourth largest exporter. Seed is a basic element of cotton cultivation. Improving its production and distribution can improve the income of producers and bring about positive changes for the entire cotton sector. The mission carried out in Cameroon from 16 to 23 January 2020 is part of the “Support program to the cotton seed supply chain in Sub-Saharan African countries”, supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany (BMZ) and financially supported by the German Cooperation (GIZ) Program “Sustainable Supply Chains and Standards”. Its aim was to complete the survey already completed in other African countries (Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Côte d'Ivoire). In Cameroon, cotton is currently grown by 150,000 to 200,000 producers, with an average seed-cotton yield of over 1,500 kg/ha, the highest in Africa in rainfed cultivation. National production, after a sharp drop in the late 2000s, has been growing almost continuously for ten years and is expected to reach 330,000 tonnes of seed-cotton in 2019/2020. A target of 600,000 tonnes of seed-cotton has been set for 2025. The three main stakeholders in Cameroon's cotton sector are: - Société de Développement du Coton du Cameroun (Sodécoton), majority owned by the Cameroonian State and in a monopoly situation, in charge of managing the production and marketing of seed-cotton, ginning and marketing the products. - Institut de Recherche Agricole pour le Développement (IRAD), a public research institute - Confédération Nationale des Producteurs de Coton du Cameroun (CNPC-C), a non-profit organization providing inputs and training to producers.
