Optimization of the production of sugarcane one-eye cane setts in organic cropping systems in French Polynesia

Vitrac M., Teai T., Shili-Touzi I., Poser C., Goebel F.R.. 2022. International Sugar Journal, 124 : p. 748-753.

To increase the efficiency of the vegetative reproduction and growing conditions of young plants under organic agriculture, sugarcane one-eye cane setts were produced following new methods used in Reunion Island. While they are produced using standard cane tops, our study was conducted on cane parts to be used regarding the capacity to develop buds and leaves and on the optimization of the density for both Saccharum officinarum and spp. cultivars. A criss-cross (or split-plot) experimental design was chosen including 3 factors such as density (quantitative), cane parts (qualitative) and cane varieties RRV (modern) and JRP (noble) with a gradient of heterogeneity (shading) and constraint (watering). Canes were divided into segments designated as white tips (the very top section of the cane) and top of canes (the next segment). Mortality and recovery rate of one-eye bud setts were measured at different growth stages (number of leaves, and biomass weight) were recorded over 56 days. The best results were obtained using one-eye cane setts from the white tips segment with close to 100% of recovery after 5 weeks growth under 50% shading with RRV. With the noble variety JRP stalk diameter influenced leaf biomass and therefore growth until tillering stage in the field.
