2024 was a "political" year on the world rice market. India, the world's leading exporter, was partly absent due to the embargo imposed by the Modi government in the run-up to the general elections. The embargo was only finally lifted in September, and against a backdrop of abundant production, prices fell by between $100 and $150 a tonne. Thailand and Vietnam, which had benefited from India's withdrawal, should see their exports fall in 2025.
