Identification of Potential Geographical Indications from Seychelles

Bouhaddane M.. 2024. Montpellier : CIRAD; European Commission, 21 p..

The overall aim of this field mission was to provide technical support and guidance to Seychelles authorities, to identify potential GIs from Seychelles with a view to adding value to products whose quality and/or reputation is linked to their geographical origin. Building on the online workshops (4 sessions held between February and April 2024) with members of the National Intellectual Property sub-committee on GIs, which have resulted in an initial classification of potential GI products, the specific goal of this mission was to ascertain the suitability and feasibility of GI recognition for the shortlisted products, namely Seychelles Bourgeois, Kordonnyen Sale, Coco de Mer, Seychelles Honey and Galet Mayok, by examining the following key considerations: - Stakeholders' willingness to engage in the GI process and their capacity for collective action - The strengths and challenges of the potential GI products, and the likely impact of GI registration on their development. To this end, a series of consultations were held over the course of the week both with private operators and representatives of public institutions, in presence of members of the National IP sub-committee on GIs. The stakeholders represented were: - Beekeepers Association of Seychelles - Department of Fisheries - Seychelles Fisheries Authority - Coco de Mer Selection Committee - Department of Environment - Island Scent Pty Ltd (owner of the brand Coco de Mer Collection). In addition, two field visits were organized to a Galet Mayok producer in Val Dan D'or and to a beekeeper's production site in Anse Etoile. An additional product was also reviewed during the mission: Kazye (traditional fish trap woven out of bamboo strips), as suggested by the cabinet of ministers. Therefore, a meeting was held with a Kazye artisan.
