Report on local banana: Market and valorization study
Caussin F., Tran Quoc H.. 2025. Vientiane : CIRAD, 24 p..
This report presents findings from a field-based assessment of the local banana market in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The study aims to identify barriers and opportunities for valorizing and commercializing a greater diversity of local banana varieties. While Lao PDR is a center of banana biodiversity, the domestic market is dominated by a single variety (Kuai Nam) due to price stability, renown vitamin content, and familiarity. Interviews with vendors, processors, and supermarket managers reveal a constrained and informal market system. Key barriers include short shelf life, low consumer awareness, and logistical challenges such as the lack of cold storage. However, there is clear market interest in banana diversity, especially among younger consumers and vendors open to innovation. The report identifies immediate steps to strengthen the market presence of local varieties, such as awareness campaigns, branding efforts, improved post-harvest handling, and school-based promotion. It also outlines a medium-term vision for structured market integration and future export potential, particularly to Thailand and niche regional markets.
