The first PPR outbreak in Greece was laboratory confirmed in the region of Thessaly on the 11th of July 2024. A total of 86 farms in multiple regions were infected and no additional outbreaks have been reported in Greece since 1st of November 2024. To assess the origin of PPRV identified in Greece, the sequence obtained was aligned with a curated dataset of partial N gene sequences. The determined PPRV strain responsible for the first outbreaks in Greece was most closely related to PPR viruses clustered in Lineage IV North-East Africa group. This finding raises concerns about the virus transmission pathways and entry of PPR into Europe.
