Integrating One Health and agroecology through multi-actor and transdisciplinary strategies: Insights from plantain (Musa) cultivation in Guadeloupe

Bezard M., Umber M., Guyader S., Andrieu N., Diman J.L., Hammouya D., Ozier-Lafontaine H.. 2025. Tropical Agriculture, 102 : p. 59-69. Caribbean Food Crops Society Annual Meeting. 57, 2024-07-15/2424-07-19, Punta Cana (Dominicaine, République).

In the current context, it seems urgent to move towards more sustainable food systems and improve global health. To achieve this, mobilising holistic approaches that transcend disciplines can be an appropriate solution. One of the avenues to be explored is the use of multi-actor approaches that enable genuine transdisciplinarity. In Guadeloupe, in the French West Indies, soils were massively polluted in the past due to the use of an organochlorine pesticide in banana plantation to manage weevils. The use of such pesticides is no longer an option, it is therefore necessary to identify practices that have no impact on the environment. In this context, a multi-actor and transdisciplinary method is mobilised to discuss bottlenecks to the adoption of agroecological practices and to identify potential levers. Based on the example of a bottleneck, the pressure of telluric parasitism in banana plantations (in particular weevils), and the levers identified by the focus group to respond to it; this paper demonstrates a multi actor and transdisciplinary method allow to connect agroecology to the global health approach. These results open up a number of perspectives especially on the importance of participatory approaches and highlight the need to rethink the role of researchers, or at least to develop cross-disciplinary functions.
