Under the agreement between P.T. Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology Corporation, (P.T. SMART) and Cirad Tree Crops Department for scientific and technical collaboration, a prefeasibility study on irrigation in oil plam plantations has been undertaken. Based on data provided by P.T.SMART, and a mission to the plantations involved, the purpose was firstly : to provide an estimation of water requirements, to propose irrigation systems, to carry out a cost-benefit analysis for areas found to be irrigable; and : to choose the sites and define the protocols for the irrigation experiments, to define the technical specifications for installations involving several types of equipment. This report gives the results of those studies. Subsequently, Cirad will assist P.T. SMART in : implementing the trials, training for agronomists from the compagny, possible extension of irrigation to other plantations.
